Eco-Friendly Ways to Decorate the Home

We are all thinking of ways to improve our environment, and believe it or not, we can even help out when it comes to decorating our homes. With so many different treatments and paints, you don’t know where to begin. Well, clear your head and just think of all things better for the earth…

Just because we want to be a little more conscious of our surroundings and the footprint we may leave behind, doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice great style. They now make an array of low odor, zero VOC paints to use in your home. This keeps your air much easier to breathe inside and out. These paints are becoming more popular the more environmentally friendly we get. If you don’t see any where you normally shop, ask for it so they will know it is in demand and the next time you paint, they may have it in stock.

Fabric is another way to cover your walls, however it can get expensive and if it isn’t done quite right, it can look funny. Choose your pattern intelligently. You don’t want to have to peel it all back off right after you worked so hard to put it up. So take your fabric and dip the strips into starch, laundry starch in a pail. Squeeze out the excess and smooth it out over the wall, using a spackle knife or a wallpaper smoother to get the bubbles out. As it dries, you may notice a certain amount of bubbling then. Take a paintbrush and dip it in the starch. “Paint” over the bubbles and they will flatten out. When you want to change your décor, simply peel it from the wall and wash the fabric. Any residual starch can be wiped off of the wall.

If you don’t really want to mess with gooey starch or wet paint then repositionable wall fabric is an idea for you. This comes in your choice of photo and size with a “sticky note” backing that adheres to many different surfaces like drywall, metal and glass. Using your photos of your favorite vacation spots or what you consider your own personal “Garden of Eden”, it can transform your home into a place you cannot wait to come back to. And if you feel you don’t have a photo you wish to use, many places that do the custom wallpaper have databases for you to choose from. So if you have never been to Rome yet you are in love with its countryside, chances are you can have a mural of that in your home without having to go there on your own. Use the tools that are out there. This paper will also remove from your walls easily and go back up in another location, making redecorating a breeze!

Just because you might be looking out for the environment, doesn’t mean you have to give up having a fun and trendy atmosphere in your home. Make yours the house everyone wants to party at!
