Delta Airlines joins The Climate Registry, commits to emissions reduction

Delta Air Lines has further enhanced its ongoing commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by being verified by and joining The Climate Registry—a non-profit organization that operates the only carbon footprint registry in North America that helps registered companies identify and manage their greenhouse gas risks and opportunities.

The first legacy carrier to be qualified to be a part of this registry, Delta received membership by undergoing a rigorous verification of their greenhouse gas inventories by an external Verification Body in accordance with The Climate Registry’s General Reporting Protocol.

“We’ve made significant strides to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and are pleased to now be a part of an organization that verifies and validates our commitment,” said Ken Hylander, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Corporate Safety Security & Compliance, in a press release. “Increased transparency is a significant part of Delta’s efforts to build a business model that continually improves sustainability over the long term, which is why we support consistent and transparent standards to calculate, verify and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions.”

Delta reveals that the company is continuously investing in fuel-saving initiatives including: improving operating procedures, removing unnecessary weight, installing aircraft winglets and retiring inefficient aircraft, and replacing them with planes that produce fewer emissions per passenger. What’s more, the airlines has lowered its annual greenhouse gas emission by 17 percent in six years (a 7.6 million metric ton reduction).
