LED signIf you’re starting a new business or you own an already established business you could benefit greatly by investing in energy efficient LED signs. Every bit as customizable as neon but with many other advantages, lots of stores are choosing LEDs for all of their sign and lighting needs. There has never been a better time to become environmentally conscious and make the move to becoming a green company, and the first step should be using LED lighting for your sign. Longer lasting than any of the alternatives LEDs do not have to be changed as frequently, saving the environment from a bombardment of used bulbs. If you’re considering going green with energy efficient LED signs read about all the great benefits below.

LED Signage – Better and Brighter than Neon

When it comes time to choose a sign for your storefront or business you’ll need to decide between going with neon or LED lighting. Not only is an LED sign ten percent less expensive than neon but it will burn brighter and longer than a comparative neon sign. LED signs like those from BrightLEDSigns.com are clearer and are easier to read from far distances, making your brand more recognizable and easily identifiable from farther away than neon ones. If power is your thing you should know that LED signs use six to ten times less wattage than neon signs, which will save you a lot of money and clear your conscious if you like to leave your sign on overnight.

Cost Effective for their Entire Lifespan

As bulbs wind down their life they tend to burn harder, sucking up power as they die off. LEDs will use a consistent amount of power throughout their entire lifespan, and it will still use significantly less wattage than any other type of bulb. If you’re looking for a cost effective alternative for your sign then investing in LED is your only option. The savings on your energy bill will let the sign pay for itself over a short period of time and help cut down costs for your business.

Choose LEDs for All of your Lighting Needs

So you’ve already researched it and decided to go with LED lighting for your sign. The first thing that went through your mind was probably ‘why couldn’t I switch all my lights to LEDs?’ The fact is that you can, and very easily. LED lights aren’t just for the front of your store, they can be tweaked to replace all of your home and office lights as well. If you’re going to save on one light there’s no reason why you shouldn’t save on every one of them.

If you’re investing in a sign for your business make sure it will be as visible as possible by using LED lighting. LED is the lighting of the future and the sleek look afforded by it will make sure your business is modern and up to date and your consumers won’t see you as dated or out of touch. There has never been a better time to go green so kill two birds with one stone so make sure your next sign is an energy efficient LED sign.

So many myths when it comes to LEDs for signs, and compared to Neon.

First off if you want to call LEDs Green, and if Green is a concern to you, you have to know where these LEDs are produced at. Chances are their produced in China. China has coal plants, that pump mercury into the air, not so green. Is it green to take 50 watts to make an LED (the board, the chip, the resistors, the drivers, etc etc) to save 5 watts?

The DOE just challenged LED manufacturers with their false advertising in laboratory testing in the caliper testing. Big loss their too.

The fact is when it comes to signage they are NOT as bright as Neon and so far nor have we seen actual testing results to say they last longer. When it comes to red neon and red leds, red neon does not degrade in light because it’s just glass and gas and they can easily last 20-60 years. Leds degrade in light.

When it comes to equal brightness of sign surfaces you don’t really save much in energy (Fluorescent lamps & Neon vs LED). In fact the upfront cost to use LEDs is so high in large projects it can take 20-40 years for return on investment.

Fluorescent lamps and neon are 100% recyclable, LEDs are not.

LED modules and products get revised just about yearly, like computers. So when a sign you have a year or two later needs service or LED replacement chances are those LEDs are not made anymore. This means the customer will have to replace all LEDs just to make the lighting even and the same Kelvin.

LEDs are very sensitive to heat and can catastrophically fail

LEDs have their place in the lighting world don’t get me wrong, but their not replacements for neon or fluorescent lamps. All light sources have their place based on the application

      Erik,

A passionate response, but really lacking in terms of actual data to support your claims.

These LED signs are, for the most part, displacing neon signs of similar size. Where do think the neon signs are made? How are they “greener” in production? ( Heated glass tubes, argon/neon, mercury, and a larger plastic backing/enclosure).

Oh, and the runtime savings ARE significant. A typical neon window sign uses 60 to 100 watts, a typical LED sign 5 to 15.

Your argument seems to be aimed at a LIGHTING application. This isn’t lighting per se, it’s window placed advertising signs.

LED signs are much brighter than neon signs AND they don’t dim as they age like neon. A neon sign is at its brightest the first year and dims considerably over the next two years. LED does not lose its brightness, in 5 years it will be as bright as it was in the first year.

In addition, the transformers required to operate neon signs are no longer produced in the USA; they have to be imported from China. This is the biggest reason that we stopped manufacturing neon signs at our company.

LED signs biggest bonus is in the energy savings. Here is a chart that compares the energy costs of comparable incandescent, neon and LED signs:
