Log Cabin

The most ideal and inexpensive way to extend your living space is to invest in an outdoor garden cabin. Making permanent renovations to your physical home can be incredibly costly and there are far cheaper options available to maximise your storage space in a more eco-friendly manner.

With summer finally here, now is the perfect time to spruce up the garden and make it looks its finest. Make use of the very unpredictable British weather throughout the coming months as 2012 is certainly living up to be an exciting year for the population: Royal Celebrations, European Football Championships and of course the upcoming events in London which go without saying. With the annual Glastonbury Festival taking a year off, why not hold your own mini festival or summer party in your garden. Without the infamous mud, rain and plethora of tents of course!

Log CabinA log cabin would be ideal for this social occasion and it provides an eco-friendly approach to a home extension and very few people realise that an attractive looking and well maintained cabin can add a substantial addition to the cost of the property. Therefore, investing now will create a long term effect when you look to sell your home.

For those who run a home business investing in a log cabin would be a perfect venture. From as little as £2500 not only would it cut costs on renting office space, it would decrease the use of car fuel which is beneficial for both business and the environment. As the economic climate has plummeted, garden offices have become increasingly popular in which they can be wired to meet your electrical needs as well as maintain heat efficiently. Having your own working space is highly important however there is no correct way to use your cabin!

There are endless possibilities to making use of an outdoor living space. Families may want to develop a nursery and this would provide a stimulating room for a child to play as well as being safe and comfortable. For the younger generation, this type of structure could be suitable for housing a drum kit or music practice room where neighbours wouldn’t be disturbed.

You may want to consider having a relaxation room for yoga, a gym or even a games room with a bar and a pool table. Log cabins are a convenient option and require little planning, no legal permission and can be re-used. They come in a variety of styles and sizes and can also be made to your satisfaction.

I have lived in a log house for over a decade and I can tell you the maintenance is very expensive, think about the insects that love wood. Additionally, think about what you do when on of the logs on the bottom has to be replaced? You have to have an expert come in, lift the rest of the house up and put a new log in place. We did not build the house and a flaw in planning used an open plank balcony, the rain in the northwest went right down on the support logs and ran down to the main structure. We had to replace the long support log completely across the front of the house, the log itself cost over $8,000. and labor on top of that. Now imagine having to lift the entire side of the house to get a bottom log replaced!!

Unless the space between the logs is chinked inside and out and very carefully around all doors and windows to wind whistles right in. And speaking of cold wind, look at the logs. The only area between the logs is the little space between the logs. The log on top (this of course, is where you want the logs exposed on the inside for the truly rustic look) has a wedge cut the full length of the log so there can be insulation can be used, not much insulation.

    But, they are beautiful.
