North America’s largest solar rooftop project announced for Gloucester Marine Terminal

The largest solar rooftop project in North America will soon be coming to New Jersey’s Gloucester Marine Terminal, and, when complete, will generate enough renewable energy to power 1,500 homes.
The rooftop solar project
The ambitious project launched by the Holt family, who owns Gloucester Marine Terminal, and SunPower Corp., a solar technology provider, is beginning construction very soon, with an expected completion this fall. The rooftop solar project requires the placement of 27,528 individual photovoltaic panels that will cover 1.1 million square feet of rooftop space at the Marine Terminal. When all is said and done, the project will carry a price tag of $42 million, and will generate 9 MW of clean energy – enough to cover approximately 80% of the Marine Terminal’s energy consumption, and an amount that would traditionally be responsible for releasing 9,500 tons of CO2.
Tax credits increasing solar projects
This project, privately funded by the Holt family, is undoubtedly being undertaken because of the federal tax incentives being provided to anyone who invests in clean energy projects. Just last week, Google made headlines when it announced it would be financing smaller-scale rooftop solar projects for 10,000 U.S. homes, and they also took advantage of federal tax credits.
