India is playing a crucial role in not only generating clean and renewable energy, but also looking to conserve water at the same time which is having a big impact on the local environment. There are thousands of canals all across India, and they started a pilot project in the Mehsana district in April 2012 which saw solar panels being added above the canal which helped to meet the country’s energy demands and also helped to stop water evaporating as quickly as well. The original pilot project was set up on a 750 meter stretch of canal near Chandrasan village and has meant rave reviews of the technology used and the ability to combat two major problems that we face in the modern age, conservation of both power and water.
The solar panels are the same technology which is used around the world today, so there is nothing special about them as such. The thing that makes this pilot project special is it removes the need for purchasing vast stretches of land in order to install the solar panels. A lot of the canals are not used as much nowadays, so there are thousands of miles of canals stretching all over the country which can be used in the same manner. The solar panels are placed above the canal so there is still room to move underneath the panels for maintenance and you could possibly get a small boat under them. The panels are made from a thin-film photovoltaic (PV) power system and can generate up to 605 MW of energy.
With the initial project becoming very popular in a short space of time, there are plans for a number of other installations to copy the idea in this Indian state. There are over 458KM of open canals which can be accessed and the construction cost is vastly reduced by to having to purchase a lot of land in order to make this dream come to reality. Now the local energy companies are working in conjunction with developers to replicate what has been done with this first project and increase the size of it to supply a considerably larger amount of power, which will also n turn save a lot of water from being evaporated as well. Having a very warm climate, clean and fresh water is always of the upmost importance and people are being educated to try and conserve water, as well as power, as much as possible. Hopefully the repercussions of this and other projects in the country will see a much cleaner and greener India for the future so that everyone can enjoy this beautiful and charismatic country.

The project is still in its infancy, and there are a lot of interested parties looking at this from all over the world. The benefits will take some time to appear as the construction of all of the other projects in the surrounding area is still going on. Solar Power is a relatively easy system to maintain and as long as the panels are cleaned regularly to make them as efficient as possible, then there is not a lot which needs to be done to them. As the amount of project increases, so does the amount of energy that all of these projects produces and the actual cost of the energy is relatively nominal making it a very cost effective solution. The saving of water will also have a big effect on the local and surrounding areas when all of the systems are fully online, meaning there is easier access to water year round. This is especially good for some of the more remote areas. All in all, this region of India has taken the first steps in trying to actively solve issues which are going to help preserve our planet but also improve the quality of life for the local population. If only all governments around the world were so proactive then the world would be a much cleaner and nicer place to live!
